E-Book How-To

This page details how to download from a web site to an Ebookwise E-reader or a Rocket E-reader (REB 1200 purchased from E-bay).

My books from Cerridwen and Wild Rose are not sold through Ebookwise although my Wild Rose books are on Fictionwise. Here's information about how to get those books from the publisher's web site into your nifty device.

To do that you need another piece of software from Ebookwise, called The Librarian. You can buy it on the Ebookwise site and store it on your computer. What it does is allow you to take a .rb book format and convert it for use on your reader. To find the Librarian, go to http://www.ebookwise.com. Click on Help and then click on the Ebookwise Librarian FAQ link. That will take you to a spot where you can read about it and then download it. You can download a trial copy and use it before you buy, too.

To download my books to an older REB 1200 (bought on E-bay), you'll need a compact flash card reader, too. Those are those little floppy disk things, about 1.5" big (not the wee tiny ones that go in cameras, but the other ones). You'll need the 'floppy disk' plus the reader. Most newer computers come with a multi-media reader built in, but if yours doesn't, you can buy a reader to plug into your USB port for about $25.

Here's the step-by-step instructions for downloading a book from, say, Cerridwen Press's web site to your Ebookwise E-book reader (this assumes you've bought the Libarian software):

  1. Go to a web site and buy book in .rb format (you need that format to store on these devices). Heck, buy several copies, they’re cheap. Give them to your friends, your relatives, your dog.

  2. NOTE: If you can't get them in .rb format, .html is okay, too. So if you're buying from Wild Rose, go that route.

  3. Pay for the book in the usual way (credit card, etc.) After going through checkout, you’ll get a ‘download now’ option. Go ahead and download it and save the book on your hard drive of your computer.

  4. Plug your E-reader device into your computer via the USB port. Turn it on.

  5. If you got the book in .html format, double click on the book name to open it. Highlight all the text (ctrl-A) and copy the text (ctrl-C) into a Word document. If you got the book in .rb format, no need for this step.

  6. Now open the Ebookwise librarian and select Create New. Browse to the location where my book is stored and click Open once you’ve highlighted my book.

  7. A screen will show the pertinent details about the book (title, author, etc.) In the little pull-down box at the bottom of the popup screen, select “Convert to Ebookwise 1150 format.”

  8. Soon a message will come back saying that it’s converted.

  9. Check your Ebookwise device. Touch the “Online Library” tab. My book will be stored there. Touch the circle next to the book title, and it will transfer my book to your e-book library.

VISTA USERS: you may receive an error message when you perform these steps (the error will appear in the Librarian's message pane). Here's what you need to do:

In Windows Explorer, find c:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. For those of you not accustomed to Windows, the simplest way to find this file is go to My Computer. Click on the icon for C:. Click on Windows, then System32, then Drivers, then etc. Now you should see a list of files and one is named "hosts".

Right click on "hosts". Click Properties. Select the Security Tab. Click Edit next to the "To change permissions" line. Change "Users" to all rights by checking all the boxes in the lower pane. Click Apply then Ok.

The steps are similar to download to a REB 1200. Choose .rb format, download it, open the Ebookwise librarian, select Create New, browse to my book and click Open. In the pull-down box, though, select GEB 2150/REB 1200. The message will come back saying its been converted.

Now here's the big difference. You can't make a direct connection between computer and REB reader (well, you can, but I don't want to step you through how to do that. It's a bit complicated. This way is easier).

  1. Take the compact flash card out of your REB reader (turn it off first).

  2. Put the flash card into your card reader. Skim through your list of ebooks in the Librarian (if it's like my list, it's big. If not, you're not buying enough books).

  3. Look for my converted book. In the "ebook Format" column, it will say 'REB 1200/GEB 2150".

  4. Right click on my converted book file name on your PC, and you'll see a menu. One option is "Export to Memory Card". Click that and in the pathname that appears, select e:/softbks.

  5. The software will copy my book to your card. Put the card back in the REB, turn it on, and you should see my book there, waiting to be read.

NOTE: some reader have a e:/ebooks directory. If you have that, put the book in there. All that means is that your device was upgraded to a newer software version.

I haven't downloaded to a handheld computer or a PDA ... yet. Check back later, I'll put those instructions up when I have.
